Our journey to the Pantanal Sul in Brazil began as a dream—an aspiration to experience an extremely biodiverse place on Earth, renowned for its breathtaking wildlife and rich ecosystems. In pursuit of this adventure, I found myself at the esteemed Caiman House Lodge, where excitement and calm coexist in perfect harmony. This experience culminated in unforgettable jaguar safaris with Oncafari, and I can confidently say it exceeded my expectations.

The Enchantment of Caiman House Lodge

Nestled in the heart of the Pantanal, Caiman House Lodge is an exceptional base for wildlife enthusiasts. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by the friendly staff and serene surroundings. The lodge’s architecture blends beautifully with the environment, allowing guests to appreciate the stunning landscape without sacrificing comfort.

As I stepped onto the property, I was struck by the sweeping views of wetlands and vibrant greenery. Caiman House Lodge offers more than just a place to stay; it provides an opportunity to reconnect with nature. The guest houses and lobby sit on the banks of a lake, where you will constantly be enthralled with birdlife, caiman and capybara. You may even find yourself befriending a striking Rufescent Tiger Heron perched on the jetty!

Your room will be a comfortable and modern take on a lodge chalet. Each room has an ensuite bathroom with hot water and ceiling fans that are sure to keep you cool. A screened balcony awaits you for an afternoon of reading or a morning coffee while you listen to the calls of the macaws in the trees. We enjoyed the beds, decor, and amenities; overall the rooms are extremely comfortable and make you feel like you are at a hotel.

Setting Off on the Safari

Our jaguar safari with Oncafari started early, just as the sun painted the sky with shades of orange and pink. Alongside fellow wildlife enthusiasts, we boarded specially designed vehicles that enhanced our view of the breathtaking landscapes and captivating wildlife. In the dry season from May-October, the ground may still have flooded pools, but you are less likely to encounter storms. Our vehicles were specially designed to trek through floodplains and deep mud, which we still encountered in June!

The diversity in the Pantanal is astonishing. As we navigated through the wetlands, our guides used specialized GPS tracking systems to obtains "pings" from any jaguars in the area. Several jaguars in this region have been humanely collared by the Oncafari team for research, tracking, and observation purposes. However, the vast majority of individuals in this region remain uncollared.

Encounters with Majestic Jaguars

The primary goal of our adventure was to see jaguars in their natural habitat. The excitement built as we ventured deeper into the wild, with each curve in the path promising a potential encounter.

Finally, our moment arrived. Our guides took off at a rapid pace, flying through the local farmland into an open grassland. There, in the wide open vastness of the grasses was a beautiful adult female jaguar. As we watched her lounge in the morning sun, we were shocked to see a male approaching her. Our guides informed us that this male had recently been injured in a fight, which was visible through our camera lenses. A large piece of his upper lip was ripped open and dangling from his muzzle. While this gruesome scene took us by surprise, what happened next was even more indescribable. The male approached the female and mated with her for no more than 30 seconds before collapsing next to her, exhausted. We felt fortunate enough to see a jaguar, but to witness mating behavior was amazing.

We continued to see several jaguars over the course of our 3 days on safari in Pantanal. We also encountered a female and her cub practicing protecting a kill. These magical experiences really cannot be seen anywhere else reliably like in the Pantanal wilds.

A Flourishing Birdlife

Beyond jaguars, my safari introduced me to an array of bird species that left me in awe. The skies above the Pantanal are alive with color, thanks to the many birds that inhabit the area.

I was thrilled to see vibrant toucans and elegant jabiru storks, each adding a unique charm to the region. My husband was delighted to see such a myriad of species and colors. The Caiman Lodge has setup multiple housing units in the trees of their property to allow the stunning Hyacinth Macaw to dwell unthreatened as well.

Other Amazing Wildlife Encounters

In addition to jaguars and birds, our safari provided opportunities to observe capybaras, the world's largest rodents, as they enjoyed the wetlands. Their calm demeanor and social nature were delightful, as they interacted with caimans and other wildlife.

Meanwhile, reptiles basked under the sun, demonstrating the Pantanal's marvelous biodiversity. Of course, we experienced many caiman, the small alligator-like species for which the lodge is named. These encounters reminded me of the incredible ecosystem we were experiencing, alive with excitement at every turn.

Capturing Magical Moments

With a focus on photography, I found my time at Caiman House Lodge perfect for improving my skills. The stunning landscapes, rare wildlife sightings, and spectacular sunsets provided an ideal backdrop for my photographic journey. The lodge itself is also visually impressive, despite its remote location. The open concept lobby and seating areas boast comfortable chairs, a fire pit, overlooks of the lake, and views of the bird life. The dining area was quaint but furnished with local wood and decor.

As our adventure at Caiman House Lodge came to an end, I felt immense gratitude for the experiences I had. From majestic jaguars to vibrant flora and fauna, the Pantanal far exceeded my expectations and became a photographer's paradise.
