After being bit by the safari bug in 2022, I was aching to get back to a game lodge. In 2024 I encouraged my family to take a safari so they could also understand the joy that comes with safari. On a 2 week tour of Southern Africa, we were greeted with our safari experiences by staying at Nkorho Bush Lodge in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa.
From exhilarating wildlife encounters to luxurious accommodations, my time at this bush lodge surpassed all expectations. Join me as I share my unforgettable adventure and explain why Nkorho deserves a spot on every safari enthusiast's bucket list.

Arriving at Nkorho Bush Lodge
When we arrived at Nkorho Bush Lodge, I was immediately captivated by the natural beauty all around me. Nestled in an expansive open grassland surrounded by trees, the lodge offered a warm, welcoming atmosphere that felt like home. The friendly staff greeted me with a cold drink and genuine smiles, setting the tone for the exceptional hospitality I would experience during my entire stay.
The lodge beautifully blends luxury with rustic charm. Our spacious chalet offered breathtaking views of the wildlife-rich landscape. Just out our door we could see impala, hyena, and the resident hippo Hank, who often ventures too close to the lodge to say hello. As I settled into my cozy suite, I eagerly anticipated the adventures ahead, ready to experience the wonders of the South African wilderness.

A Wildlife Photographer’s Paradise
As a passionate wildlife photographer, I found Nkorho Bush Lodge to be a dream come true. The lodge is ideally located, providing incredible photography opportunities. Each morning, we embarked on exhilarating game drives led by our knowledgeable driver, Matt and spotter David, who truly understood the park's intricacies.
During my first game drive, I was mesmerized by the rich biodiversity that Sabi Sands has to offer. I vividly remember spotting a beautiful leopardess, Watika, up a tree with what remained of her kill right out of the gate. I have a fondness for leopards, and I knew that Nkorho Bush Lodge would be just the place to encounter multiple in the span of 3 days.

Every drive provided exciting photographic chances, such as elephants splashing in a watering hole and lions feasting on a carcass. Nkorho has an abundance of hornbills that reside in the area, so if you enjoy birds, this is also an exciting place to visit! Each day we enjoyed the surprises that safari brings, and managed to see the Big 5 during our short stay here.
A highlight of our drives had to be when Matt drove us deep into a patch of bush and shrubbery telling us to remain silent. As we crept along in our not-so-quiet 4X4 we were delighted with a quick flash of spots. As we ventured closer we were informed that this female leopard had a new cub that had not been visualized yet. We watched the female stalk through the grasses and bush while her cub bounced along cautiously behind her. Finally, our encounter culminated with the female crossing the road just meters ahead of us followed by a full view of her cub.

Another highlight, or should I say "exciting moment", featured an injured male leopard charging at our spotter, David, as he sat perched in the spotter chair. Banging and clanging on the car, revving the engine and using loud voices was finally enough to detour him, but for a few seconds it seemed like we may come back to the lodge with one less limb!
Luxury Accommodation and Experience
At Nkorho Bush Lodge, guests are greeted with luxurious accommodations that seamlessly blend with the natural landscape. Our chalet featured a private terrace with sweeping views of the bush and watering hole. I often found myself captivated by the sounds of nature, from the calls of distant birds to the whispers of leaves swaying in the gentle breeze.
If you are feeling adventurous you can try out the outdoor shower, which promises to be a thrilling experience. The furniture and decor perfectly blended with the natural surroundings and was a comfortable place to retire after long days on drives.

Nkorho is also committed to responsible tourism and conservation practices. They strive to minimize their environmental impact, enabling guests to connect with nature more meaningfully. With their focus on sustainability, I felt my visit was just as much about protecting this beautiful landscape as it was about enjoying it. In their curio shop they sell handmade goods from artisans throughout South Africa. Most have a tag that explains how your purchase will positively impact the environment.

Evening Game Drives and Sundowners
One of the highlights of my safari experience was the evening game drive, and Nkorho's did not disappoint. As dusk descended, we ventured out to witness the bush's breathtaking transformation at sunset. The sky burst into colors that left me in awe.
Our guide, Matt, shared fascinating stories about the wildlife we encountered. We stopped for sundowners—enjoying refreshing drinks while soaking in the stunning landscapes—a cherished moment during any safari. Might I add, he makes the best G&Ts you'll ever try? This is a MUST when on safari in South Africa.

Embracing Nature
Nkorho Bush Lodge offers amazing opportunities to connect with nature on a deeper level. I was particularly impressed with how they promote conservation practices in such a pristine environment.
During a guided bush walk, I learned about local flora and fauna, gaining insight into each species' role in the ecosystem. This experience was a stark reminder of the delicate balance of nature and our responsibility to protect it. Each guide is well equipped with the knowledge and stories about the plants, tracks, and even the insects in the area. We learned a tremendous amount about the termite mounds and how the construction is tough as concrete. One thing to know about safari is unexpected is the norm. During our bushwalk we turned to find Matt wrist deep in dry elephant dung, picking it up, and showing us it's uses in the wild.
Personal Reflection
My time at Nkorho Bush Lodge was not just a getaway; it was a life-changing experience that proved to be thrilling and also peaceful. The perfect combination of luxury, adventure, and responsibility created a fulfilling escape.
As I prepared to leave Sabi Sands, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. My stay at Nkorho allowed me to fulfill lifelong dreams and reconnect with nature like never before. Sharing photos and stories from this lodge, and the people we met has brought back so many exciting memories since our trip.
