As we crossed the Zimbabwe boarder into Kasane, the excitement of entering a new country buzzed in my mind. Not only were we excited to experience Botswana, we were exceptionally excited to see the abundance of wildlife this country offers. A charter flight from Kasane to Kwara airstrip awaited. Carrying only 8 people, we anxiously counted down the 60 some minutes to our arrival. The verdant expanses of the Okavango Delta contrasted beautifully with the arid stretches present during dry season, painting a truly captivating picture. Seeing this stunning landscape from above was an exhilarating prelude to the adventures ahead.

Touching down on the remote airstrip near Splash Camp, I felt a rush of excitement. I was about to embark on an extraordinary journey that promised both adventure and luxury.

Arrival at Splash Camp

The warm welcome at Splash Camp was akin to stepping into a scene from "Out of Africa." The camp seamlessly blended luxury with the natural beauty of its surroundings. It was designed to harmonize with the wilderness while offering top-notch comfort.

Our chalet was a slice of paradise—spacious, elegantly furnished with wooden floors, and boasting an en suite bathroom that overlooked a serene landscape complete with a watering hole. Stepping inside, I felt a peaceful escape, with the gentle rustle of leaves and distant wildlife calls creating a soothing ambiance.

Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters

Each morning at Splash Camp brought new surprises right outside my tent. During breakfast, with freshly brewed coffee and perfectly fire cooked oatmeal, I was treated to the sight of elephants, hippos and wildebeest softly roaming through the grasses. Seeing these majestic creatures up close was breathtaking. The pinks and purples that filled the morning sky made waking up at 5:00 worth it.

The day continued with thrilling activities, including guided game drives and boat safaris, each offering unique perspectives on the delta's rich wildlife. The Kwando Safaris team curated experiences based on our interests, ensuring that every outing was memorable.

One highlight was a dramatic encounter with a pack of African painted dogs that had a herd of wildebeest on the run through the floodplains. Watching the pack work as a group to corner individuals, while keeping the rest of the herd away was a perfect moment for photography enthusiasts like me. Another exceptionally incredible memory was witnessing a pride of lions lounging in the sun with their litter of cubs. Bouncing, rolling, and play fighting was abundant amongst this group of young and energetic cubs.

Whether it was watching an elephant splashing in the water or spotting a rare bird taking flight, every moment felt special.

Evening Under the Stars

The evenings at Splash Camp were equally captivating. After enjoying delightful dinners made with fresh, local ingredients, we gathered around the campfire. Surrounded by laughter and stories beneath a canopy of stars, we were able to connect with other travelers experiencing this magical place alongside us.

The guides shared their extensive knowledge, enriching our experience with insights into the region's ecology and conservation efforts. I was genuinely moved by their commitment to protecting Botswana's amazing wildlife, which deepened my appreciation for this stunning environment.

Kwando Safaris goes above and beyond to make each experience, no matter how small, unique and memorable. One evening we were escorted to a dimly lit area away from camp with a campfire building. Once we approached we realized that Splash Camp had setup a dinner in the bush for all of the guests. The chef brought her entire kitchen to us and curated a meal that was both memorable and delicious. She featured items like Kudu, chicken, local vegetables, and homemade bread. Conversations with other travelers kept us out late into the night, but this allowed for a spectacular and unobstructed view of the Milky Way.

What truly distinguished Splash Camp was not only the impressive wildlife experiences but the luxurious touches that enhanced my stay. The staff was attentive, always ready to meet my needs with personalized services that felt like a warm embrace.

From exquisite afternoon tea served on the deck to refreshing drinks after exhilarating excursions, every detail was thoughtfully considered. One standout feature was the outdoor shower. Bathing under the stars while being surrounded by nature was a uniquely magical experience that truly embodied the spirit of the safari.

Kwando Safaris guides and trackers are also exceptional at their roles and provide educational and exhilarating game activities. We became close with our guide ST and tracker, Village, who allowed us to stay with an animal as long as we liked to get amazing photos. They shared personal stories and taught us lessons from their culture throughout our stay.
